Things to Do in Akhaltsikhe and Rabati

Akhaltsikhe, roughly three and a half to four hours from Tbilisi, is built around Rabati Castle, a fortress complex heavily restored in the 2010s into a mix of mosque, church, museum and citadel walls — polarising among visitors who prefer ruins left as found, but undeniably photogenic. Sapara Monastery, tucked into a forested valley a short drive away, is the quieter counterpoint most tours pair it with, and the town itself is the standard overnight stop before Vardzia.
