Things to Do at David Gareja

David Gareja is a monastery complex cut into a semi-desert ridge on the Azerbaijani border, around 90 minutes to two hours from Tbilisi depending on the state of the access road, which is unpaved for the last stretch. Udabno Monastery's rock-cut cells and faded 9th-century frescoes are the highlight, along with the climb to the ridge line where you can look straight over into Azerbaijan. Bring water and sun protection — there's no shade and little else out here besides the monastery itself.
