The Kakheti Wine Country: What to Do

Kakheti is Georgia's main wine region, a couple of hours east of Tbilisi across the Alazani Valley, where qvevri winemaking — fermenting grapes in buried clay vessels — has continued for roughly 8,000 years and is recognised by UNESCO. Rather than one town, it's a spread of wineries, monasteries and hill villages including Telavi, Sighnaghi and Kvareli, and most day trips from Tbilisi combine two or three of them around a tasting or two. Come with an appetite: tastings here usually come with food, not just wine.
